Solar Term | 廿四節氣

Updated: Aug 16, 2020

Twenty-four solar terms are specific seasons in the lunar calendar that express natural rhythm changes. The current "twenty-four solar terms" are based on the position of the sun on the return to the ecliptic, that is, the annual sun's trajectory is divided into 24 equal parts, each 15° is one equal part, and each one equal part is a solar term, starting in Spring Commences, Finally the Severe Cold.

Twenty-four solar terms are the product of ancient farming civilization. Farming production is closely related to the rhythm of nature. The Chinese ancestors recognize the changing laws of season, climate, phenology, etc. during the year by observing the movement of celestial bodies. Each solar term represents the different changes of season, climate, and phenology. The twenty-four solar terms express the unique connection between human and the nature. It is one of the typical representatives of Chinese culture. It not only played a guiding role in agricultural production, but also influenced all Chinese cultural concepts, such as medicine, literature, arts, architecture, and so on.

Solar terms originated in China, then spread to Korea, Vietnam, and Japan, countries in the East Asian cultural sphere. On December 1, 2016, the Solar Terms were listed as UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage.
